AKRON, Ohio — One person has died and another was hurt amid an early morning house fire in the 800 block of Huber Street in Akron.

It was just after 3 a.m. Friday when the Akron Fire Department says they were dispatched to the scene where firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames showing throughout the single-story home.

“Firefighters immediately made an aggressive rescue effort as they battled the blaze,” according to a press release from the Akron Fire Department. “One occupant escaped the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department and was treated and transported to the hospital by paramedics.”

That person reported there was somebody still inside the residence.

“The structure was fully involved in fire causing the roof to collapse,” according to the press release. “Despite the best efforts of the fire department, the person remaining in the house was unable to be saved.”

One firefighter had minor burn injuries, which were treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

No additional details were immediately available.
