Only 4 Dems make cut for Sept. 8 Akron mayoral primary

The Summit County Board of Elections will make the announcement at its meeting Tuesday.

AKRON -- Four of the six Democrats who filed petitions to run for Akron mayor had their petitions certified late Monday, according to the Summit County Board of Elections website.

The Summit County Board of Elections will make the announcement at its meeting Tuesday.

The four are Summit County Councilman Frank Comunale; Summit County Clerk of Courts Dan Horrigan; state Sen. Tom Sawyer; and Akron Councilman Mike Williams.

The two who filed petitions that were not certified were Pastor Natural Hunka Kaboom and small business owner Sage Lewis.

One Republican -- attorney Eddie Sipplen -- had his petitions certified as well. He is the sole Republican candidate so there will not be a primary.

Additional candidates may run as independents if they file by Sept. 7.

The race drew so many candidates after longtime Mayor Don Plusquellic unexpectedly resigned and retired late last month.

His successor, Garry Moneypenny, then resigned amid a scandal where he confessed to having inappropriate contact with a female city employee. That's when former Council president Jeff Fusco stepped up and was sworn in as mayor. Fusco is not seeking the mayoral election.
