Ohio State Highway Patrol: 1 dead, 7-year-old injured in Ashtabula motorcycle crash

ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio — A motorcyclist is dead and a 7-year-old injured after an Ashtabula County crash Saturday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to calls of a crash on State Route (SR) 322 in Williamsfield Township at approximately 2:43 p.m. Upon the arrival of the officers, they found 18-year-old Dale Dehn injured near the roadway after being ejected from his motorcycle. A 7-year-old child, who was a passenger in another vehicle, also sustained injuries from the incident and had to be air-lifted to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

After an initial investigation was completed, Highway Patrol officers said that Dehn was traveling westbound on US 322 at a high rate of speed when he struck a Dodge Grand Caravan, operated by Iowa native Jason Flenker, in the rear of the vehicle. Flenker was attempting to pass a mail carrier vehicle who was delivering mail when Dehn struck the back of his van.

Dehn died as a result of his injuries. No additional information was released on the status 7-year-old child.

The incident remains under investigation.
