AsiaTown Cleveland hosting candlelight vigil Saturday evening to remember victims of the Atlanta spa shootings

The vigil will start around 8 p.m. on Saturday.

SOLON, Ohio — AsiaTown Cleveland announced Saturday that it would hold a candlelight vigil in honor of the victims of the recent spa shootings in the Atlanta-metro area.

The vigil is scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Solon Community Park (6679 Som Center Road, Solon, OH 44139) and AsiaTown Cleveland encouraged members of the Northeast Ohio community to come out and show support.

"Please join us to condemn hate, condemn racism, condemn dehumanization of women," a flyer for the event says.

The shootings, which left eight people dead- six of whom were Asian women- have sparked a national conversation on the recent rise in hate crimes and violence against members of the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently, Cleveland Councilman Basheer Jones held a "cash mob" to bring in support for one local restaurant, LJ Shanghai, which has been the target of xenophobic phone calls.
