Canal Fulton police officer shot in the foot during standoff, suspect dead

Sergeant Josh Barabasch was transported to Aultman Hospital and later released.

Canal Fulton Police say an officer is recovering after being shot in the foot during a standoff.

It started Saturday just before 6:30 p.m. on Waterside Avenue when officers were called to check on Gabriel Mayberry, 39, who was threatening to hurt himself and others. 

When officers arrived, they say Mayberry refused to comply with orders and threatened himself and officers. While at the home, it was discovered that Mayberry has a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in court on an OVI charge. 

While trying to contact Mayberry, officers say he shot at them through the front door. Sergeant Josh Barabasch was hit in the foot by a projectile from the gunshot.

SWAT officers entered Mayberry's home around 8:45 p.m. and found the 39 year old dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sergeant Josh Barabasch was transported to Aultman Hospital and later released.He is expected to make a full recovery.
