CANTON, Ohio — A 71-year-old man originally taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries has died after being pulled from an apartment fire overnight in the 1800 block of Trinity Place NW in Canton.

The Canton Fire Department says firefighters responded to the scene at 11:44 p.m. Thursday. Upon their arrival, crews reportedly found a fire in a basement apartment "and heavy smoke throughout the rest of the structure," which made it difficult for second-floor occupants to escape.

Fire officials say two people were rescued from second-floor windows. Two others were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries, according to Canton fire officials.

The man who was taken to the hospital was rescued from the apartment where the fire had originated, but unfortunately was later pronounced dead. He has since been identified as Ronald Mikes.

No firefighters were hurt. The American Red Cross has also responded to assist with several families who were displaced as a result of the fire.

The incident is currently under investigation with damages estimated at $25,000.
