Canton Police investigate mail carrier harassment

At least two mail carriers say someone they did not know came up to them and ordered them to get into a car

CANTON, Ohio — Police in Canton say three mail carriers reported suspicious activity on their routes — drawing attention to their safety

Canton Police say one mail carrier reported being watched by someone in a vehicle and another two said they were approached and asked to get into a car.

When they refused, he left.

Police say they're looking into what happened and whether the same person is involved in all three incidents.

There was some chatter that mail delivery was suspended on Thursday. A postal worker told us that delivery was suspended, but a spokeswoman with the U.S. Postal Service would not comment and directed questions to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. They released the following statement:

Postal Inspectors are following up on reports of suspicious activity towards Postal Service employees. We are in the process of gathering information on the events, so I cannot provide specifics at this time. What I can say is our employees are safe and accounted for and mail is being delivered. The Postal Inspection Service takes the security and well-being of postal service employees very seriously and the Postal Service remains focused on the needs of its employees. Postal employees connect our communities. We ask everyone to remain vigilant and continue looking out for them. Anytime you see anything suspicious related to our postal employees, please report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.

While it's unclear if mail was suspended Thursday, workers told us it was back to normal on Friday. Police and USPS are asking people to keep an eye out and to report anything suspicious they might see.
