13 shot, 2 killed over weekend in Cleveland; 4-year-old boy among those injured

The incidents took place between Friday and early Monday morning. In the case of the child who was shot, his 15-year-old brother has been named as the suspect.

CLEVELAND — Roughly a week after a mass shooting in the Warehouse District left nine people injured, Cleveland has experienced yet another violent weekend that saw 13 people shot and two killed in 12 separate incidents.

While none of the altercations took place near West 6th Street, the most recent stretch between Friday and early Monday morning represents yet another chapter in what has become a sad trend in the city. The rising crime has cast a cloud over Mayor Justin Bibb's administration, as well as City Council and the Division of Police.

The first homicide took place just before 9:15 p.m. Friday, when 18-year-old Theodore Broadus was fatally shot in the head and neck on West 38th Street in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. Witnesses told authorities he had been in a vehicle with three other males when shots were fired inside the car, and the remaining three then ran away. A Good Samaritan attempted to render first aid to the victim to no avail, and officials are now searching for the three suspects.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the men is asked to call detectives at (216) 623-5464. Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County are also offering a $5,000 reward.

Nearly 24 hours later, 33-year-old Rachel Daniels died at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center after being shot in the face in the 3500 block of East 154th Street in Mount Pleasant. Police say an upstairs neighbor held the 34-year-old male suspect down when he attempted to flee, and the man allegedly shot Daniels following an unspecified conversation. Officers arrested the suspect at the scene.

Of the 10 remaining shootings, one of them notably involved a 4-year-old boy being shot multiple times near the intersection of East 117th Street and Union Avenue, also in Mount Pleasant. The child was taken to Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital in Warrensville Heights Sunday afternoon, and while details are scarce at this time, authorities say his 15-year-old brother has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The timeline of the other nine shootings is as follows:

  • Friday, 10:56 a.m.: A 31-year-old woman was shot in the arm in the 8000 block of Grand Division Avenue. She was taken by ambulance to MetroHealth Medical Center.
  • Friday, 8:18 p.m.: A 22-year-old man was shot in the foot and an 18-year-old man was shot in the chest within the 1800 block of Willowhurst Road. Both were taken by ambulance to UH.

  • Sunday, 6:14 a.m.: A 26-year-old man arrived at Metro after being shot in the shoulder. The alleged incident occurred near the intersection of East 102nd Street and Prince Avenue.
  • Sunday, noon: A 50-year-old man was shot in the hip within the 3400 block of Daisy Avenue. He was taken by ambulance to Metro.

In addition, a head-on car crash on Kinsman Road late Saturday afternoon left two people hurt, including a 34-year-old woman with serious injuries. Authorities are also investigating three stabbings, and there were four suspected fatal drug overdoses.
