14 shot, 1 killed during New Year's weekend in Cleveland

A 43-year-old man was killed outside his own apartment, while nine of the injured were hurt during the New Year's Eve period itself.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are conducting multiple investigations following a violent New Year's Eve weekend in the city.

In all, 14 people were shot during the period beginning Friday and ending early Monday morning. One of those victims died, while nine of the remaining injured were hurt during the New Year's Eve period itself.

The fatality took place just after 6:30 p.m. Friday, when a 43-year-old man was found dead on a balcony outside his Parklawn Drive apartment. Neighbors told authorities he had been climbing onto the balcony to get in through the back door since his front door was damaged in a recent burglary attempt, and it is believed he was shot by an unknown suspect while doing so.

The victim has since been identified as Charles Williams. No arrests have been made at this time.

In addition, one of the other incidents involved a 58-year-old man who was apparently shot by a security guard outside Barrio on Euclid Avenue just before 3 p.m. Saturday. The man was shot in the behind and later walked to Bohn Tower on Superior Avenue before being taken by ambulance to MetroHealth Medical Center in unknown condition. The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been specified.

The timeline of the other shootings is as follows:

  • Friday, 2:23 p.m.: A 41-year-old man was shot in the leg near the intersection of East 79th Street and Chester Avenue; taken by ambulance to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
  • Friday, 5:21 p.m.: A 19-year-old man was shot in the stomach and leg on the 700 block of East 156th Street; taken by ambulance to UH
  • Saturday, 2:09 a.m.: A 29-year-old man was shot in the left thigh and foot on the 15600 block of Glendale Avenue; taken by private vehicle to Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital in Warrensville Heights
  • Saturday, 10:18 p.m.: A 36-year-old man was shot in the right foot and leg while a 35-year-old man was shot in the behind on the 3100 block of Central Avenue; taken by ambulance to Metro
  • Sunday, 12:21 a.m.: A 31-year-old woman was shot multiple times in both her legs; taken by ambulance to Metro
  • Sunday, 12:59 a.m.: A 31-year-old man arrived at South Pointe Hospital saying he had been shot in the face near the intersection of East 154th Street and Harvard Avenue
  • Sunday, 1:01 a.m.: A 19-year-old man arrived at South Pointe saying he had been shot in the hand near the intersection of Lee Road and Harvard
  • Sunday, 2:17 a.m.: A 24-year-old woman walked in to Metro saying she had been shot in the thigh on the 15100 block of Lakeshore Boulevard
  • Sunday, 4:02 a.m.: A 14-year-old man was brought to the emergency room of Cleveland Clinic's main campus by his mother, who said he had been shot in the ankle while walking home on Colfax Avenue
  • Sunday, 5:43 a.m.: A 40-year-old man arrived at UH after those with him said he had been shot in the chest and both arms on the 1040 block of East 76th Street
  • Monday, 12:22 a.m.: A 22-year-old individual arrived at South Pointe saying they had been shot near the intersection of Lee Road and Miles Avenue

There was also a car crash late Sunday night on Interstate 90 near the I-71 split. A 35-year-old woman died while two people were taken to Metro, including a 50-year-old man in critical condition.
