Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority receives $27 million from Department of Transportation

"Modernizing the Port of Cleveland for the 21st century is an investment in our supply chains, our companies, and our workers."

CLEVELAND — Major funding is coming to the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, thanks to a program from the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $27.2 million to help modernize the Port of Cleveland. According to the DOT's Maritime Administration, the project consists of both a development phase (planning, permitting, engineering, and design) and construction activities at the Port of Cleveland.

The funds will modernize a 144,000-square-foot warehouse (Warehouse A), expand stormwater collection and treatment infrastructure, construct a modernized maintenance and repowering facility for terminal equipment, and install electric infrastructure to meet the power requirements of ship cold ironing and electrified cargo handling equipment.

“Great Lakes ports are the avenues through which American commerce flows,” said Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH-9) in a statement released on Monday. “Modernizing the Port of Cleveland for the 21st century is an investment in our supply chains, our companies, and our workers."

The Port of Cleveland funding is part of the Biden administration's $703 million Port Infrastructure Development Program. There are 41 projects in 22 states and one territory utilizing funds made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that passed last year.

“Infrastructure investments are essential for the future of our cities and ports,” said Rep. Shontel Brown (D-OH-11) in the statement. “I commend the Biden Administration for its continued commitment to improving our nation's infrastructure through this grant to modernize the Port of Cleveland, which builds on billions invested through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The grant will strengthen vital infrastructure in Ohio and the Great Lakes region, and I will continue to advocate for Ohioans by supporting investments that strengthen the resilience of our cities."
