CLEVELAND — One in six people living in the Greater Cleveland area suffer from food insecurity, according to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

While hunger remains a problem in the community, Citizens Bank and Feeding America have partnered in effort to combat the problem.

Cleveland has been selected as one of three U.S. cities to participate in a pilot research program to fight hunger. Called the Household Empowerment Pilot, the program is designed to help working families facing hunger by providing charitable food, public benefits and financial security services.

Houston, Texas and Theodore, Alabama were also selected for the pilot program. One in nine Americans, including 11 million children, face hunger, according to Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fonteno.
