Woman carjacked, fatally run over with own vehicle after volunteering at Cleveland church

Cleveland police say the investigation into this incident is "in the very early stages."

CLEVELAND -- A woman is dead after she was carjacked and run over with her own vehicle in southern Cleveland Thursday afternoon.

According to Cleveland Police, a family of four was doing some volunteer work at a church near the area of Archwood Avenue and West 25th Street. They were painting when two suspects attempted to steal their car. Officers say the vehicle was not left running and the ignition was damaged due to the theft.

The mother and father both attempted to regain control of their vehicle. In the struggle, the 33-year-old woman was struck by the car and died at the scene.

She has been identified as Lesley Dejesus of Cleveland.

The suspects fled the area in the car then bailed out a few blocks away on Denison Avenue. Police say the suspect they initially detained was not involved in the incident. No other information regarding their identities is known at this time.
