Parma Police Department begins deer culling program; harvested animals to be made available to residents

City Council recently agreed to allow officers to thin out the local herd they say has become a nuisance to the community.

PARMA, Ohio — Parma's police department has begun a citywide deer culling program in an effort to control the growing population of the species within the community.

On Friday night, police sharpshooters were expected to begin culling deer at multiple wooded locations, this as Parma City Council recently agreed to allow officers to thin out the local herd that have been seen roaming the city and are considered to be a nuisance. Authorities say the harvested deer will be made available to residents at a limit of one per household.

"There will be no choice in the deer provided to you, e.g., buck, doe, size, etc.," a statement from the department read. "Residents will be responsible for field dressing the deer offsite and any additional processing."

Those interested in retrieving a deer can sign up using this Google form. Culling hours on selected days are expected to be between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m.
