BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — Police in Bay Village are issuing a warning over what they call “distraction burglaries,” following a homeowner saying she was robbed by one man after a second man distracted her by asking about her water pressure.
Police describe a "distraction burglary" as occurring when one person engages with a homeowner while another enters the home and steals items, 3News' Amani Abraham reported on Wednesday.
A Bay Village woman told police that while she was chatting with a man who asked her about her water pressure, another man went inside her home and started stealing things.
The woman reported that both men then left in what police described as a dark-colored sports utility vehicle.
Bay Village police have said multiple distraction burglaries have been reported in the past week.
In some instances, one of the accomplices may pose as a utility worker or other service personnel to try to get in the home, while a second accomplice actually sneaks in, according to the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB says homeowners shouldn’t let workers inside their homes without an appointment and encourages people to check for valid identification.
The BBB also warns that people should be on the lookout for falsified documentation.
