2 firefighters injured while battling Solon house fire; family displaced after 'major damage'

A Solon fire lieutenant had cold exposure injuries to his hands. Another Solon firefighter sustained minor injuries when a ceiling collapsed on him.

SOLON, Ohio — A pair of firefighters were injured after flames ripped through a Solon house on Sunday evening.

According to Solon Fire Chief Mark Vedder, crews from five different departments battled the house fire on Maple Drive from approximately 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Vedder says the garage fire extended to the attic and caused major damage to the home.

Firefighters also had to deal with bitter cold weather, which made conditions even more challenging. Vedder says a Solon fire lieutenant had cold exposure injuries to his hands. Another Solon firefighter sustained minor injuries when a ceiling collapsed on him.

Vedder says the family has been displaced as a result of the fire and is staying with relatives. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

Investigators are scheduled to return to the house on Tuesday. 

The Solon Fire Department was assisted by the Chagrin Valley Fire Department, Orange Village Fire Department, Bainbridge Township Fire Department, and Bedford Heights Fire Department.
