Inmate from Lake County killed at Ohio correctional facility; homicide investigation underway

MADISON COUNTY, OHIO, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a death of an inmate at the Madison Correctional Institution as a homicide.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction identified the inmate as 23-year-old Robert Leach Jr.

A spokesperson for the Ohio State Highway Patrol said, "At this time the investigation is being handled as a homicide, no charges have been filed, and it remains under investigation."

The incident happened on Saturday around 12:20 p.m., according to ODRC.

Leach had been at the center since May 2017. He was serving a seven-year sentence on charges of trespass in a habitation, attempted burglary, and three counts of burglary in Lake County.

Willoughby Police arrested Leach in April of 2016 in reference to seven suspected burglaries in Willoughby, one burglary in Mentor, and one burglary in Wickliffe.
