Sheffield Village police officer clears residents from house fire, then battles flames

'An amazing job by our Officer Kevin Bring for saving lives.'

SHEFFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — A Sheffield Village police officer is being lauded for his efforts to evacuate two occupants from an early morning house fire on Friday, then sticking around to help fight the flames.

According to a Facebook post from the Sheffield Village Fire Department, Officer Kevin Bring discovered a fire at a home on East River Rd while on patrol just after 5 a.m. Body camera video shows Bring walking toward the side of the house where the fire was escalating toward the back patio. He attempted put out some of the flames with an extinguisher he grabbed from his vehicle. 

Bring then made his way to the front of the house. He opened the door and shouted "your house is on fire, get out" to a man sitting in a chair. The resident told Officer Bring that another person was in the house. Bring went to the side of the house where the person was sleeping and banged the siding below the window. "Your house is on fire. The house is on fire. Get out. Yeah, it is. Come on." he shouted to the occupant, who finally came outside.

By the time Bring went back to the front of the house, smoke had started to fill the area and he can be heard coughing. 

"I already put out the fire," the second occupant told the officer. "Oh, it's still going," Bring replied. 

A second officer came on scene to assist as the Sheffield Village Fire Department was being mobilized. Bring tried to use a garden hose to put out the flames. 

By 5:15 a.m., fire crews had arrived to to take over. "It's (the fire) all the way on the porch going into the house on this left side," Bring told firefighters. "It's starting to climb."

There is no word on what caused the fire. But the Sheffield Village Police Department paid tribute to Bring on a Facebook post. "An amazing job by our Officer Kevin Bring for saving lives," the post stated.
