Summa Health to temporarily suspend ER department services in Medina

The temporary closure begins May 7, 2020

MEDINA, Ohio — Summa Health has announced Monday that it will temporarily close its Medina Emergency Department due to a significant drop in the number of patients seeking emergency medical in that location along with the need to conserve PPE (personal protective equipment).

A hospital spokesperson said visits to Summa's Medina Emergency Department were low before the COVID-19 crisis with an average of 20 people using the facility per day.

Since the pandemic, an average of only seven patients use the facility each day.

Another reason cited for the low number of in-person patients at the Medina Emergency Department is the increase in the use of telehealth for treatment.

To ensure continued care for urgent medical needs in the community, the Summa Health Medical Group Medina Family Practice will have expanded hours and will be open until 9:00 p.m. each day. The Family Practice will also see walk-in patients and people who are not already registered there.

The address of the Summa Health Medical Group Medina Family Practice is 3780 Medina Road, Suite 250. The phone number is 330-723-3256.

There is no specific timeline for the resumption of emergency department services at the Medina facility.
