1 dead after bicycle collides with tractor-trailer in Mansfield

Police say a 29-year-old man was riding a bicycle when he traveled through a red light and into the path of a tractor-trailer.

CLEVELAND — A man died at a hospital after riding his bicycle into the path of a tractor-trailer in Mansfield on Wednesday evening, police said. 

According to the Mansfield Division of Police, the crash happened at the intersection of South Main Street and West 1st Street at 5:37 p.m.

Police say a 29-year-old man was operating a bicycle eastbound on West 1st Street when he traveled through a red light and into the path of a 2016 Freightliner tractor with an attached trailer. The tractor-trailer, which was driven by a 48-year-old man, was traveling southbound on South Main Street when it struck the bicyclist. 

The 29-year-old man was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries. 

The tractor-trailer driver was not injured, police said, though he was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. 

Investigators with the Mansfield police department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Mansfield police are continuing to investigate the crash. 

Police said additional details about the crash "may be released at a later date."
