Discolored water alert: Cleveland Water warning east side customers

Northeast Ohio residents are encouraged to check their water flow.

CLEVELAND — Editor's note: The video in the player above is from a previously published, unrelated story.

Cleveland Water is asking east-side customers to check their water before using it due to high levels of manganese, which may turn the water a yellow to light brown color.

According to officials, residents in Beachwood, Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Gates Mills, Highland Heights, Hunting Valley, Lyndhurst, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Pepper Pike, Richmond Heights, and South Euclid may experience discolored water due to excess of the chemical.

At this time, there is no boil alert in place and officials say that the water is safe to drink. Residents are encouraged not to do laundry, however, as the water may stain clothes.

The issue stems from hypoxic Lake Erie water coming into the Nottingham Water Treatment Plant, bringing elevated levels of manganese.

Adjustments have been made to the treatment process; however, the levels of manganese in hypoxic water impacting our intakes are highly variable and therefore challenging to remove.

Cleveland Water crews are currently flushing hydrants in the area.

Any customer who experiences discolored water is encouraged to reach out to Cleveland Water at (216) 664-3130, and include their name, address, telephone number, and when the discoloration began.
