Parties split seats on Ohio Supreme Court

Democrats narrow the Republican majority to 4-3.

OHIO, USA — The votes are in. The race for the two available seats on Ohio’s Supreme Court have been filled.

The faceoff between incumbent, Justice Sharon Kennedy, a Republican and Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge, John O’Donnell, a democratic, was close until the final stretch with Kennedy winning with 55 percent ( 2,604,047 votes).

In total, a combined 4,730,087 votes were cast in the November election.

In the second race,  Appellate Judge Jennifer Brunner ousted Incumbent Justice Judi French by 483,699 votes, 55 percent of the votes cast.

While the races appear non-partisan on the ballot, the partisan balance was large topic of conversation ahead of the election. With this split decision, the Republicans remain the court majority as they have more for than 30 years.

The Ohio Supreme Court is made up of seven members, a chief justice and six associate justices, each serving six-year terms.
