Robert Godwin Sr.'s family finds empathy in grief

Robert Godwin's sister Ruby spoke to WKYC Channel 3 on the day that her brother's murderer committed suicide.

The worrying if Steve Stephens is going to strike again is over.

But it's a relief that, for Robert Godwin Sr.’s family, is tempered with the still gut-wrenching reality that he's gone forever.

Sitting with his sister, Ruby Godwin-Fisher, you would have seen it in her eyes and heard it in her voice when she gives her take on 3 days of living a nightmare.

"I really don't know what I'm going to do without him. I feel so lost," said Godwin-Fisher.

74-year-old Robert Godwin was Ruby's big brother, best friend, and travel partner before Steve Stephens killed him.

In cold blood.

On Easter Sunday, and offered it to the whole world on Facebook.

"I am hurting. God knows nobody knows what I feel. It’s like my heart is going to burst. I want the hurt to stop but I don't know what to do to make it stop," said Godwin-Fisher.

As for news on Tuesday afternoon that Stephens had taken his own life?

"I think that was a coward's way. If that's what he wanted to do, if he was that miserable, he should have done that before he killed my brother. Maybe it's wrong to feel that way. Why make us suffer because he was suffering? I was also worried he would do this again to somebody else. I wouldn't want anyone else to feel like our family feels. I don't hate him. I'm just angry right now and I'm going to pray that I get past that," said Godwin-Fisher.

WKYC Channel 3 News reached out to Steve Stephens’ mother. She had no interest in an interview on a day that has to be unbearable for her as well.

Which is why we have such big love for Ruby.

Even in her grief, she has room in her heart to feel for Steve Stephens family.

"They are probably hurting too. His mother lost a son. She is going to miss him. I know how I feel about my boys and being a mother, no matter what they do, you still love your children. I’m sure she loves hers and I'm sure her heart is very heavy today too. So we are going to pray for them too," said Godwin-Fisher.

It was a moment when we were so struck by how these strangers lives have been woven together through tragedy...that none of them chose.

And this night, through Ruby, we found empathy on the other side.
