Residents allowed to return to homes following gas leak in Massillon

Residents are asked to avoid the "dangerous" area at this time.

Crews are still working to repair a line rupture that led to a "large" natural gas leak in Massillon Tuesday.

The leak occurred on the south side of Walnut Road Southeast, across from Fresh Mark. The city says the line ruptured after crews working in the area struck it.

Residents were asked to avoid the "dangerous" area for a period of time and several homes were evacuated, with those living in the area being invited to use the local rec center. However, officials now say the gas has been shut off and people are being allowed to return to their homes.

Fresh Mark says it was unaffected by the situation and did not evacuated its facility. The company released a statement saying, "Authorities have communicated to us that it is safe to keep operations running as normal. The safety of our employees is our top priority."

Walnut Road Southeast will remain closed for several hours as crews continue to work in the area.
