NORTH CANTON, Ohio — North Canton City Schools will be receiving a big boost in its plans to construct a new middle school.

On Thursday, the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) approved $33.8 million in state funding for a new building to house grades 5-8 in North Canton. This will combine with another $57.6 million in local funding for a $91.4 million public construction project.

“Research shows that the condition of school facilities impacts academic achievement,” said Governor Mike DeWine in a statement. “The construction projects approved by OFCC today will create safe and supportive learning environments that will benefit students."

In all, the OFCC approved more than $210 million in state funding for North Canton and four additional school construction projects. Combined with $142 million in local funding, these projects represent more than $353 million in public construction work.

“We are always excited to partner with a school district on their facilities project,” said OFCC Executive Director Cheryl J. Lyman. “The construction of a new school has a tremendous impact on students, teachers, and the local community and we look forward to working with each of the districts approved by the Commission today."

Funding awards are contingent upon State Controlling Board approval.

The news about the funding for North Canton's middle school comes as construction continues on two new school district buildings that will replace five buildings currently in use.

A new Pre-K through grade two building will house students that presently attend the Early Childhood Center, Clearmount Elementary, and Northwood Elementary. The site of the new primary school is located on Charlotte Street.

Meanwhile, a new intermediate school, housing grades 3-5, will be located on the present Clearmount site and will face East Maple Street. This school replaces Greentown Intermediate and Orchard Hill Intermediate Schools.

Both schools are scheduled to be ready for occupation in August of 2023.
