Jayland Walker police shooting: Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan press conference for July 12

The daily press briefings are expected around 11 a.m. -- with the exception for this Wednesday as no briefing will be held amid Walker's funeral services.

AKRON, Ohio — Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan held another press briefing regarding the situation in his city after the deadly police shooting of 25-year-old Jayland Walker.

Mayor Horrigan and Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett launched the first of these daily press briefings on Monday in which he announced the downtown curfew hours had been adjusted to now take place from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. The curfew will remain in effect nightly until further notice.

“Tomorrow is about that day of mourning for Jayland and his family," Mayor Horrigan said as the family prepares to hold Walker's funeral Wednesday. "Know that all of us are mourning with you and grieving with you and will help you get through this process.”

Although Mayor Horrigan plans to host these press conferences each day, there will be no briefing on Wednesday “in order to respect a city-wide day of mourning for the memorial service of Jayland Walker.” Mayor Horrigan's press briefings are expected to resume at 11 a.m. Thursday and continue every Monday through Friday.

“These briefings will provide timely and consistent safety updates and more quickly relay information to both the public and the press,” Mayor Horrigan’s office said in a statement.

Walker's funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Akron Civic Theatre with a viewing from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The funeral itself will take place at 1 p.m.

It comes more than two weeks after Walker was shot and killed when eight Akron police officers opened fire amid a chase on June 27. Police say Walker had fired a shot at one point during the chase, but was unarmed at the time officers opened fire. A gun, however, was later found in Walker's vehicle, according to police.
