Massillon seeking first playoff era state title

It's a battle of undefeated teams in the DII state title game this week as Massillon takes on Hoban at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

MASSILLON, Ohio -- Few schools have a football history like Massillon Washington High School. Yet one thing has eluded the Tigers.

Since 1972, when Ohio started a high school football playoff, Massillon has never won a state title. The school's 24 state titles all came before the playoff era.

They have a chance to change that Thursday when they take on Archbishop Hoban in the DII state title.

"I think it would mean a lot for the city. We are going to pour everything into it this week and go out and play a great game on Thursday," said head coach Nate Moore.

Both the Tigers and Hoban will come into Thursday's game undefeated. Neither team has played a playoff game that was decided by less than 18 points.

Tiger senior Dean Clark knows that few towns support their football team like Massillon does and that there should be a great crowd at the 23,000-seat Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

"I expect a sell out. I know Massillon fans are going to come. Everybody is bringing everybody. I think it's going to sellout," said Clark

Thursday's game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
