Cleveland Indians OF Leonys Martin dealing with 'life-threatening' bacterial infection

Indians president Chris Antonetti says Martin is now recovering and outlook looks good, but "progress will be measured in weeks, not days."

Cleveland Indians OF Leonys Martin is dealing with a bacterial infection that was life threatening as of a few days ago, according to team president of baseball operations, Chris Antonetti.

Antonetti addressed Martin's condition with reporters in Cincinnati on Monday prior to the Indians-Reds game at Great American Ballpark. Per MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, Antonetti explained that Martin's infection affected multiple organs. He is now recovering and outlook looks good, but “progress will be measured in weeks, not days.”

Martin's illness first came into play on August 8, when he missed Cleveland's 5-2 victory over the Twins. According to Indians Manager Terry Francona at the time, Martin was dealing with "intestinal turmoil."

Two days later, Francona disclosed that Martin was at Cleveland Clinic for an undisclosed illness. "What I would say, if you believe in saying prayers and things like that, keep him in your thoughts. But he's in a good place. He's at the Clinic and he's getting good care," Francona said on Friday.

In six games with the Indians since being acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline, Martin has hit 5-for-15, with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. On the season, he's batting .255 to go along with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs.
