About John Beilein

Prior to being hired by the Cavs last week, the 66-year-old Beilein spent the previous 12 seasons at Michigan, where he was the school's all-time winningest coach, amassing 278-150 record, two National Championship Game appearances, two Big Ten regular-season championships, as well as a pair of conference tournament titles. In nine of his 12 seasons in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines qualified for the NCAA Tournament, advancing to at least the Sweet 16 five times.

Prior to his time in Ann Arbor, Beilein spent time as the head coach at West Virginia (2002-07), Richmond (1997-2001), Canisius (1992-97), Le Moyne (1983-1992) and Nazareth (1982-83). Over the span of his 36 seasons in college coaching, the former Wheeling Jesuit captain totaled a 754-425 record.

At the NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago last week, Beilein spoke of his decision to make the jump to the pros after spending the better part of the previous four decades in the college ranks.

“There’s never a good time to leave and you can make a couple of choices, you can leave too early maybe or you can leave too late," he said. "You never know when to leave. This was an opportunity that has so much potential, it was too difficult to pass up. It was the right thing to do.”

In addition to hiring Beilein, the Cavs have also announced the hiring of J.B Bickerstaff, who will serve as the team's associate head coach. The 40-year-old Bickerstaff has spent the last 15 seasons coaching in the NBA, including stints as the interim head coach of the Houston Rockets and most recently as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.
