CLEVELAND -- On Thursday, Sports Illustrated's Robert Klemko released a piece detailing Baker Mayfield's experience at the NFL Scouting Combine. And if there's anything for Cleveland Browns fans to take away from the article, it's that their favorite team appears clearly intrigued with the Oklahoma signal-caller.
According to Klemko, not only did Browns brass meet with Mayfield in Indianapolis, but will do so again at an already scheduled visit in Cleveland leading up to the draft. The Browns also plan on working out the reigning Heisman Trophy winner following his pro day in Norman, Okla., which is scheduled for next Wednesday.
That QB-needy Cleveland is doing its due diligence on Mayfield -- or any of the draft's other top quarterback prospects -- isn't exactly shocking news. What is interesting, however, is that some in the Browns front office have already gone on record as fans of the polarizing prospect, who at 6-foot-1 doesn't fit the profile of a prototypical pro passer.
After taking over as the team's new general manager last December, John Dorsey revealed to MMQB.com's Peter King that he had already watched six of Mayfield's games and appeared undeterred by his height -- or lack thereof. Last fall, former Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan, who recently signed on as a team consultant in Cleveland, likened Mayfield to Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
Whether the coming weeks will strengthen the Browns' fascination with Mayfield or result in them opting to go in another direction this draft remains to be seen. But thanks to Klemko's piece, we do know one thing the Browns have already learned about the former Sooners signal-caller, as Dorsey's first question to Mayfield at the combine was apparently: “So you like food trucks?”
In addition to the Browns, Mayfield already has pre-draft visits scheduled with the New York Jets and New York Giants and pro day workouts with the Jets, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. NFL teams are allowed to bring in no more than 30 players for visits to prior to the draft.
