Cleveland Browns DT Perrion Winfrey arrested on assault charge in Texas

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault of a family member.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor count of assault (family member) in Harris County, Texas, this week, court records show.

Charges against Winfrey were filed on Tuesday, with the 22-year-old released on a $1,000 bond and a protection order issued on behalf of the alleged victim, a woman whom Winfrey had been dating. Under Texas law, she classifies as a "family member" in regards to misdemeanor assault.

Selected out of Oklahoma in the fourth round (No. 108 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, Winfrey appeared in 13 games during his rookie season, tallying 22 tackles, one of which came for a loss and a half-sack. The Maywood, Illinois, native was held out of practice due to disciplinary reasons ahead of the Browns' Week 2 loss to the New York Jets, which he was made inactive for.

Despite his up and down rookie season, Winfrey flashed plenty of promise and was thought to be a potential key contributor in Cleveland's defensive line rotation in 2023.

Under the protection order, Winfrey cannot come within 200 feet of the alleged victim, her home, or her place of employment, and he cannot have any other type of contact with her whatsoever. He is also barred from possessing a firearm while the order is in place.
