School officials tell 3News that the district learned of the charges against 38-year-old Carmen Russo on Monday, Oct. 16.

Initially, Russo was placed on administrative leave due to an ongoing investigation into the allegations, but he has since decided to resign.

According to Columbiana County court records, Russo, a resident of Canfield, is facing charges for allegedly possessing criminal tools and engaging in prostitution.

School officials confirmed that Russo's contact with students was limited since he was not a teacher at West Geauga High School.

Russo is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 8:30 a.m. for an arraignment hearing.

West Geauga High School Principal Ryan Patti sent the following statement to the families of wrestlers at the school:

"I am writing to inform you that Coach Russo has resigned from his coaching position, effective immediately. Coach Russo was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations that were brought to my attention this morning. However, he has since made the decision to resign prior to the conclusion of that review process.

I realize this abrupt change at the start of the season is going to impact our wrestlers and families significantly. Please know that supporting our student-athletes remains our top priority throughout this difficult situation. We will be working urgently to put interim plans in place for the season while we search for a new head coach. Our wrestlers deserve continuity, and we aim to minimize disruption to their experience.

Thank you for your patience and grace as we handle this challenging matter. Do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any needs in the meantime. The strength of our wrestling community will help us persevere through this together."
