Northeast Ohio businesses roll the dice on winter weather

The mild winter spell has left shovels and bags of salt in the shelves at a Painesville hardware store.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Winter storms, or lack thereof, in Northeast Ohio impact local businesses. Last year, multiple storms brought good results for a number of area stores and businesses. But this season has been a different story.

A calm winter has led to a quiet Joughin Hardware in Painesville. As snow fell Friday, it marked just the fourth time Marty Nucciarone has used his snowplow.

“It’s always a gamble,” said Joughin Hardware floor manager Thomas Norman.

Nucciarone has plowed snow for 50 years. Meanwhile, Joughin’s has supplied the winter essentials since 1877.

“It’s March, we’re not done yet,” said Nucciarone. “We may have a mild spell in the middle, but it’ll catch up, Mother Nature likes to get even.”

The mild winter spell has left shovels and bags of salt in the shelves at Joughin’s.

“I haven’t sold much today, but hopefully people are going to think about it and say, ‘oh yeah, I should probably go grab some salt,’” said Norman.

Norman told 3News that the hardware store ordered more winter supplies after Northeast Ohio was hit by several strong winter storms last year.

“When we start getting piles of it and it doesn’t stop snowing until three days later, then we’re kind of like, 'this is Ohio weather,'” said Norman.
