Cleveland-filmed ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ lands 6 Oscar nominations

The movie has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Cinematography, among others.

Northeast Ohio is back in the Hollywood spotlight in a big way as a movie that was partially filmed in Cleveland back in late 2019 has just earned a handful of Oscar nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards.

Judas and the Black Messiah, starring Daniel Kaluuya of Get Out, was given the following Oscar nominations Monday morning:

  • Best Picture.
  • Supporting Actor (two nominated from the film): Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield.
  • Cinematography: Sean Bobbitt.
  • Music (original song): Fight For You, music by H.E.R. and Dernst Emilie II, lyrics by H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas.
  • Writing (original screenplay): By Will Berson & Shaka King. Story by Will Berson & Shaka King, Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas.

Kaluuya has won top acting nods for his role in the film this year from the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.

“All my crew in Cleveland, we did this together,” Kaluuya said when accepting his Golden Globe trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

He also gave a brief shoutout to Cleveland when accepting his honors from the Critics’ Choice Awards.

IMDB describes the film as follows: "Bill O'Neal infiltrates the Black Panther Party per FBI Agent Mitchell and J. Edgar Hoover. As Party Chairman Fred Hampton ascends, falling for a fellow revolutionary en route, a battle wages for O'Neal's soul."
