CLEVELAND — Growing up in the south, specifically south Mississippi, 3News' Jason Mikell was no stranger to good and hearty cuisine. From the smoked pork and smoked beef added to southern dishes like collard greens, green beans, butter beans, and field peas, to the rhythmic notes of zydeco overheard atop the smells of creole gumbo, red beans and rice, shrimp etouffee, and jambalaya.
However, it is the breakfast foods that "hold to ya" as the old folks would say down south: grits, bacon, eggs, gravy, and good ole' homemade biscuits. Like what they serve at The Roaming Biscuit.
"Why biscuits?" asks Mikell.
"Why biscuits? Because biscuits are just, it reminds you of home. It has that nostalgic feel, flavor. It's just good and buttery and just goes great with just about everything" says owner Shawnda Moye.
Moye opened her second location on West 29th in the Hingetown area of Ohio City after the success of her first location, The Bake Shop and Café in St. Clair-Superior's Tyler Village.
With the shared joy of both having family roots in south Mississippi, Mikell and Moye decided to make it a duo experience in the kitchen making the good ole fashioned bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.
"Oh, I don't know where to start. That was so good. The bacon is crispy. The biscuit is soft. There's a little bit of toastiness on the inside too, and I feel like with the egg it's like home and the pimento cheese just wraps everything up."
Roaming Biscuit is open Saturdays and Sundays only from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Bake Shop and Café is also open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 3615 Superior Avenue.
