Snake River Expedition boat ride closes at Cedar Point ahead of 2024 season

Snake River Expedition featured live actors when it first opened in 2021.

SANDUSKY, Ohio — After just a few years in operation, Cedar Point has closed the Snake River Expedition boat ride prior to the start of the 2024 season.

Cedar Point spokesperson Tony Clark confirmed the ride's closure with the following statement provided to 3News on Thursday afternoon:

"Snake River Expedition will not return in 2024. Every year, we evaluate guest ridership, feedback and usage of our attractions and make decisions accordingly as we plan for the future. At this time, there are no additional plans or announcements for the ride."

The ride's information has already been removed from Cedar Point's online list of rides and experiences.

Snake River Expedition, which was initially announced for the 2020 season, ultimately opened in 2021 after being postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The attraction featured live actors and animatronics within various scenes along the waterway.

Here’s how Cedar Point described Snake River Expedition:

"Trapper Dan needs your help! Embark on one of his riverboats and be a part of the adventure. Help the crew complete a secret mission, smuggling valuable bounty to safer waters. What is it? We don't know -- and it's best you don't ask! Beware of a few surprises, twists and turns around every bend -- it's not always smooth sailing."

For those of you who never experienced the attraction, this is footage from the ride's debut season:

Snake River Expedition, which many considered a throwback to the park’s previous Paddlewheel Excursions, was touted as a family attraction.

“The best thing about these boats is that everybody can ride them,” Cedar Point had said. “Literally, everybody can ride them. You can bring your baby, grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles. Everybody.”

Cedar Point is set to debut its new Top Thrill 2 roller coaster this year, which is an upgraded version of Top Thrill Dragster that features three launches with a top speed of 120 mph. The park is scheduled to open for the 2024 season on Saturday, May 4.
