Mom Squad: Preparing your babysitter for emergency

With the summer season fast approaching, babysitters will be in high demand. The American Red Cross explains what sitters and parents both need to be prepared for.

CLEVELAND — Lately, the topic of babysitting seems to be heating up - especially as we get closer to the summer months. That's because families are hiring babysitters to cover childcare needs. Or maybe your own child is now at the babysitting age and you're wondering if they're prepared.

In this week's Mom Squad, 3News' Maureen Kyle talked to Angele Cassiday with the American Red Cross about the babysitting classes offered, including CPR training.

"I think for anyone, it's hopefully learning that quickly in that class to memorize the depth and the pace and where you put your hands and all of that. So that hopefully, that like adults, instincts will kick in," says Cassiday.

Cassiday talks about the preparation every babysitter needs and how the Red Cross app has emergency information at the touch of a button.

"So, if they suddenly forget 'oh my gosh, how was I supposed to handle poison ivy again?' they can pull that up in the app, and it will have everything they need to do to handle poison ivy."

In this episode, learn how to prepare your babysitter for what your family needs, what babysitters should ask the parents, and the extra safety protocols to follow when starting with a new sitter.

You can catch all of this on the latest episode of Mom Squad on WKYC Plus and the WKYC YouTube channel.
