CLEVELAND — A Cuyahoga County grand jury has indicted the 22-year-old man accused of murdering Glenville student-athlete Te'Vion Cunningham earlier this month in Euclid.

According to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, Meonte Robinson faces the following charges for the shooting death of Cunningham:

  • One count of aggravated murder
  • Two counts of murder
  • Two counts of felonious assault
  • One count of having weapons while under disability
  • One count of tampering with evidence

Investigators say that on Jan. 5, Cunningham tried to buy a gun from Robinson near Seabrooke Avenue and East 222nd Street. Robinson is accused of shooting Cunningham in the chest and leg before fleeing the scene in his car.

“This case is a perfect example of the carnage that guns are causing in our community," said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley in a statement. “We are seeing teenagers with increased access to guns, and unfortunately, in this case, a high school student went to purchase one and lost his life.”

Euclid Police Captain Mitch Houser told 3News that officers responded to a call from the Euclid Fire Department about a man lying unresponsive in a Seabrooke Avenue neighborhood at around 6:30 p.m. Cunningham was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

While the incident occurred near Cunningham's Euclid home, he played both football and basketball for Glenville, making him a member of the Tarblooders' state championship football squad.

"We don't believe that something like this would ever happen in a vacuum," Howser explained. "It's 6:30 in the evening in a residential neighborhood at dinnertime. People are home from work, people are having a meal. We can't think that for a second that someone didn't see something."

Robinson was arrested by Euclid police last week. He appeared in Euclid Municipal Court on Jan. 18 and was issued a $1 million bond.
