CLEVELAND — United Airlines has announced that two new nonstop routes are coming to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in March.

A United spokesperson confirmed to 3News that customers can fly nonstop from CLE to both Las Vegas and Phoenix beginning March 7. The seasonal flights will operate five times per week and continue through May 20.

Last month, United announced the expansion of its daily service from Cleveland to several destinations in Florida. The airline is reintroducing daily nonstop service from CLE to Tampa and also increasing its frequency of flights from Hopkins Airport to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and Orlando to two daily, nonstop flights.

However, United is not the only airline to increase its footprint in Cleveland.

Earlier this month, Frontier Airlines announced new nonstop service from Hopkins Airport to Montego Bay, Jamaica. The carrier also plans to expand operations at Cleveland Hopkins with a new crew base in March of 2024. The plan is expected to employ up to 110 pilots, 250 flight attendants and 50 aircraft maintenance personnel within the first year.

The new routes and new crew base comes at a time when the nearly 100-year-old Cleveland Hopkins International Airport has its eye on the future. This week, the airport announced that it has brought in Paslay Group, "the nation's premier airport development consultancy," to assist in implementing its terminal modernization plan. As 3News reported last month, the cost of the plan is nearing $3 billion.

The airport is expected to hire a design firm next year to formalize plans for the new terminal and begin early construction-related efforts in 2025 – the centennial anniversary of CLE. When the airport opened in 1925, it was the first city-owned airport in the United States.
