The emergency landing happened just before 6 a.m. in a field near State Route 608 and Nauvoo Road in Middlefield Township.

Troopers say that a 1976 Cessna 310R, piloted by 66-year-old Michael Davey of Newbury, Ohio, was forced to make the emergency landing due to mechanical failure. Davey was not injured in the crash. The OSHP reports that the aircraft was disabled and several fences on the property were destroyed as a result of the landing.

Davey had been flying to Cleveland after leaving from Morristown, New Jersey earlier in the day. He had been in communication with Cleveland air traffic control prior to landing. The OSHP says that due to the nature of the mechanical issue, the airplane was not able to fly to the nearest airport in Geauga County.

The FAA will be conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
