WADSWORTH, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the truck driver who reported being assaulted with a knife in Medina County on Wednesday apparently 'fabricated' his story to troopers.

The incident happened at around 8:00 p.m. on I-76 near Akron Road. Troopers were called to a report of the attempted robbery and assault of a truck driver.

The driver initially reported a dark colored pickup flashed its high beams in an attempt to get him to stop. After pulling over, the driver claimed he was assaulted by a man with a knife while a second male pulled out a gun. The driver also claimed the pair robbed him before they fled the scene.

The driver was taken to an Akron hospital with non-life threatening injures.

Once at the hospital, the driver was interviewed by investigators who noted inconsistencies in the driver’s statement. He eventually withdrew his original claim of being assaulted and robbed.

I-76 westbound was closed Wednesday between State Route 261 and State Route 94 while officials investigated at the scene.

Troopers say the incident is still being investigated.
