Today, Monday, October 11 is federal holiday, Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day,  which is where we begin our update.

Columbus Day celebrations in the United States – meant to honor the legacy of the man credited with “discovering” the New World – are almost as old as the nation itself.

But since the 1990s, a growing number of states have begun to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day – a holiday meant to honor the culture and history of the people living in the Americas both before and after Columbus’ arrival.

There are supporters and opponents on both sides of the argument, Our Brandon Simmons will have more on the topic with insight from locals coming up on What’s New at 5 p.m.

Cleveland community activist, vintner Mansfield Frazier dies at 78

The city of Cleveland is mourning the loss of activist, journalist and entrepreneur Mansfield Frazier.

Frazier, the co-founder of Chateau Hough -- the country's first inner-city vineyard -- passed away on Saturday after a brief hospitalization. He was 78 years old.

Members of Frazier's family confirmed the news of his passing on social media, Sunday morning.

His funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

McDonald's will be offering free breakfast to teachers and staff this week

McDonald's wants teachers to know breakfast is on them nationwide. 

Teachers, administrators, and school staff can treat themselves to a free meal starting Monday, Oct. 11 through Oct. 15, according to the fast-food giant.

Staff will be able to choose from the Egg McMuffin, a Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit or a Sausage Biscuit. School staff also have drink choices like a medium hot or iced coffee or soft drink. 

Educators must bring a valid ID to receive their free meal. Breakfast, which can vary by location, typically ends at 10:30 a.m.
