1 dead after fire in Stark County apartment building: Victim identified as 13-year-old boy

​According to the Jackson Township Fire Department, the fire took place around 9:45 p.m. Saturday in a building on Harris Avenue Northwest.

CLEVELAND — One person is dead after a fire tore through a three-unit apartment building in Stark County

The victim has since been identified as 13-year-old Joshua Terry.

According to the Jackson Township Fire Department, the fire took place around 9:45 p.m. Saturday in a building on Harris Avenue Northwest in the township. 

“Our hearts go out to the family that lost a loved one today," Jackson Fire Chief Tim Berczik said in a news release posted to social media. "We want to urge all of our residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and if you hear those alarms sound, please, get out, stay out and close the doors on the way out.”

A 911 caller reported the fire and told dispatchers that a person was still inside the building. The fire department said firefighters arrived and saw flames "pushing out through a door and a window." 

Firefighters quickly got the fire under control while "simultaneously" recovering the person inside. The victim was transported to a hospital. 

The Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal, Jackson police and the fire department are collaborating to investigate the fire.
