Ohio March 19 primary election update: Biden and Trump win presidential races, Moreno captures GOP nomination for US Senate

CLEVELAND — The March 19 primary election has arrived in Ohio as voters across the state cast their ballots on a number of issues and races.

So what's happening at the polls for this primary election? Any long lines or issues? What about results? We will update this story throughout election day. Ohioans voted on everything from the presidential primary, to the U.S. Senate race, to issues that impact their schools and communities.

ELECTION DAY IN OHIO: REAL-TIME UPDATES

1:35 a.m. Across Northeast Ohio, school issues in places like Medina, Mogadore, and Nordonia failed at the ballot box, while Brooklyn's bond measure is still too close to call. Danielle Wiggins has more.

10:45 p.m. While we wait for final numbers to come in, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley has released a statement indicating his "definitive victory" over Matthew Ahn.

"I am grateful for the continued confidence shown by my fellow Democrats," O'Malley said in a statement Our campaign, grounded in county-specific data and facts, rang true with voters who value experience and proven solutions over absurd hypotheticals. I extend my appreciation to Democratic leaders, labor unions, business owners, and everyday residents who share a commitment to public safety and justice."

Signal Cleveland's Mark Naymik talked to 3News' Russ Mitchell about the race.

10:20 p.m. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who will finish third in the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, addressed his supporters. 

9:49 p.m. 3News' Bri Buckley was at Matt Dolan's watch party and posted the following videos on X after his concession speech.

9:43 p.m. With 23% of the precincts reporting in Cuyahoga County, incumbent Prosecutor Michael O'Malley leads Matthew Ahn by a count of 29,113 to 16,501 (64% to 36%)

9:36 p.m. Here's a list of Ohio Congressional winners in their respective primary races, according to the Associated Press:

  • Bob Latta wins Republican nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 5th Congressional District
  • David Joyce wins Republican nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 14th Congressional District
  • Amy Cox wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 10th Congressional District
  • Matthew Diemer wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 7th Congressional District
  • Warren Davidson wins Republican nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 8th Congressional District
  • Tamie Wilson wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 4th Congressional District
  • Kevin Coughlin wins Republican nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 13th Congressional District
  • Adam Miller wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 15th Congressional District
  • Vanessa Enoch wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 8th Congressional District
  • Michael Kripchak wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 6th Congressional District special primary and primary election
  • David Taylor wins Republican nomination for U.S. House in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District
  • Michael Rulli wins Republican primary in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, site of train derailment

9:13 p.m. Bernie Moreno is giving his acceptance speech after winning the Republican U.S. Senate primary in Ohio. In a split-screen moment, Matt Dolan is speaking to his supporters after his defeat. Moreno said that Dolan made a "very gracious" call in conceding defeat. You can watch Moreno's speech in the player below.

9:01 p.m. Incumbent U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has issued a statement after Bernie Moreno's victory in the GOP Senate primary. 

“Ohioans know I have always stood by them to make sure their hard work pays off and will stand up to anyone who gets in the way. The choice ahead of Ohio is clear: Bernie Moreno has spent his career and campaign putting himself first and would do the same if elected. Elections come down to whose side you’re on, and I’ll always work for Ohio – from standing up to special interests taking advantage of Ohio workers and corporations raising costs for families to making sure our veterans get the healthcare they earned.”

8:36 p.m. The Associated Press has called the Republican U.S. Senate primary in Ohio to Trump-backed Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno. Read more here.

8:35 p.m. Let's check in with one of the top school issues in Northeast Ohio tonight. The Medina City School District has put a 7.5 mill continuing levy on the ballot. 

If passed, the $14.4 million will go toward current operating expenses and supporting students. Medina City Schools are seeking the levy to achieve stability, consistency, reduced election costs and long-term planning.

  • For the Tax Levy: 2,346 votes - 45.55% 
  • Against the Tax Levy: 2,804 votes - 54.45%

8:17 p.m. In addition to the U.S. Senate race in Ohio, there are also several members of the House of Representatives who are facing primary battles. 

Incumbent Rep. Dave Joyce (R-OH-14) has defeated his GOP challengers Kenneth Polke and Elayne Cross. His campaign released the following statement:

“I am honored to receive the continued faith of Northeast Ohio Republicans. I could not have won this primary without strong support from my family, campaign staff, volunteers, and most importantly, the voters of OH-14. Thank you for putting your trust in me to continue fighting for you in Washington.

"Northeast Ohio families are facing difficult challenges, and they are looking for dependable leadership that can deliver common sense conservative results. In Congress, I’m proud to be leading the fight to protect the Great Lakes, combat the opioid epidemic, grow our economy, and secure the southern border. I will always continue to put hardworking Ohio families ahead of politics by getting things done that put our communities first.

"The campaign does not end with this primary victory. I will continue to campaign aggressively in all five counties to earn the trust and support of all voters this November.”

8:12 p.m. The battle between Bernie Moreno and Matt Dolan for the U.S. Senate Republican nomination has been going back and forth since results were first announced. As of right now, Dolan has retaken the lead:

  •  Matt Dolan (R) 75,351 - 38.87%
  • Frank LaRose (R) 44,931 - 23.18%
  • Bernie Moreno (R) 73,585 - 37.96%

We still have a long way to go. Less than 1% of precincts have reported.

7:51 p.m. We're getting our first look at results of the U.S. Senate GOP race as Bernie Moreno holds a slight lead over Matt Dolan.

  • Matt Dolan (R) 30,618 - 37.35%
  • Frank LaRose (R) 20,003 - 24.40%
  • Bernie Moreno (R) 31,354 - 38.25%

7:37 p.m. NBC has called both of Ohio's presidential primaries. President Joe Biden captured the victory on the Democratic side, while former President Donald Trump won the GOP nod. 

7:30 p.m. The polls have closed. Get ready for results!

6:30 p.m. The polls are set to close in one hour! 

6:15 p.m. Lynna Lai reports that according to Columbus-based Medium Buying, a total of $36.5 million has been spent on advertising in the U.S. Senate GOP primary in Ohio. The figures break down to $29.5 million in television advertising, plus another $7 million for radio and cable. 

The Democratic group "Duty and Country PAC" spent $2.5 million to meddle in the race. 

6 p.m. With just 90 minutes to go until the polls close, we are off and running with team coverage to start 3News at 6. Here's what we have:

  • Lynna Lai has a closer look at the hotly contested race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination between Matt Dolan, Frank LaRose, and Bernie Moreno.
  • Isabel Lawrence checks in from an area polling location for an update on voting.

5:30 p.m. Just two hours until the polls close! Have you voted yet?

5 p.m. As 3News at 5 gets underway, here's a look at the U.S. Senate GOP race in Ohio from Lynna Lai, plus an update from the polls with Isabel Lawrence.

4:45 p.m. Here are some turnout numbers from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections:

  • Eligible voters: 874,373
  • Ballots cast: 141,988
  • Turnout: 16.24%

4:30 p.m. Haven't voted yet? You have three hours left until the polls close at 7:30 p.m.

4 p.m. 3News at 4 is underway! Let's get an update from the polls in Cleveland with Isabel Lawrence.

3:30 p.m. Here are some numbers from the Ohio Secretary of State's office on absentee ballots: 

  • 459,112 ballots requested
  • 408,972 ballots cast
  • 50,140 absentee ballots remain out there

3:10 p.m. 3News' Isabel Lawrence reached out to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections to see if there were any issues at polling places. According to BOE Spokesman Mike West, all of the polling places opened on time and there have been no reports of problems.

12:30 p.m. You now have seven hours to vote before the polls close at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to watch for results HERE as they come in throughout the night.

11 a.m. Haven't voted yet? You have until 7:30 p.m. before the polls close.

6:58 a.m. A voter reached out to 3News to say their polling location in Coventry Township did not have the proper voting machines delivered to the right place. The Summit County Board of Elections tells 3News the right equipment was sent to the correct polling locations, but the machines had been set for the wrong location. We're told the staff was able to get the issue resolved within minutes after the problem was discovered.

6:34 a.m. Matt Dolan, a Republican candidate in the U.S. Senate race, shared the following message:

6:30 a.m. The polls are open! Happy voting!

6 a.m. We're just 30 minutes away from the polls opening!

5 a.m. Check the clock! We're just 90 minutes away from polls opening throughout Ohio.

4:30 a.m. Among the races? Ohio voters will choose which presidential candidate they would like to support ahead of the November general election. Plus, Republicans Matt Dolan, Frank LaRose and Bernie Moreno are seeking votes in a U.S. Senate race. The winning candidate will earn a spot on the November ballot in an election matchup against incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.
