JIMMY'S TAKE: Jim Donovan says Cleveland Browns go 'full steam ahead' giving Jacoby Brissett first-team reps at quarterback

Jimmy says you could see a 'shift in attention' from Deshaun Watson to Jacoby Brissett with the first-team offense during Monday's practice.

BEREA, Ohio — Another day of training camp has come and gone on a very busy week for the Cleveland Browns. The team will practice on Tuesday, take Wednesday off, then Thursday and Friday will mark the real core of training camp with two full practices against the Philadelphia Eagles.

That will then work us to game two of the preseason on Sunday afternoon in the home opener at FirstEnergy Stadium versus the same Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff will be at 1 o'clock.

Here were the headlines of the day from camp:

  • All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett got a personal day today to handle a personal matter. No injury there.
  • Good news about cornerback Denzel Ward. He's back. Ward is off the physically unable to perform list and is able to practice. The Browns will work slowly with Ward. His destination point is Week 1 against Carolina on September 11. And I can take that a step further, that's for Greg Newsome, too. He's been nursing a hamstring issue. They want Newsome to be ready for the opener against Carolina as well.

The injury bug hit the Browns a little bit at practice as another center went down. Of course, Nick Harris went out Friday with that knee injury in Jacksonville. Today, Dawson Deaton, a rookie center from Texas Tech went down and was carted off the field. Later in practice, a kid that stood out on Friday night, defensive end Isaiah Thomas, left early and ushered out by the trainers. Fortunately, it did not look serious. The same was true for the young wide receiver from the University of Miami, Mike Harley Jr. He left practice, too.

There was a noticeable difference for those who have been wondering when the Browns would start to get (quarterback) Jacoby Brissett ready to play. That definitely hit full steam ahead today. No doubt about it, Brissett was the number one quarterback in practice getting a lot of reps with the number one offense. So you could see a shift in attention from Deshaun Watson to Jacoby Brissett.

Keep in mind Brissett will work a lot in the practices with the Eagles on Thursday and Friday, but will not play on Sunday in the preseason game against Philadelphia. In fact, a lot of the starters will not play in that game. They will play more in the third preseason game in the following week against the Chicago Bears, then get ready for the season opener against Carolina.

As for the Watson situation? Still no decision. Now, we're into a new week as Monday has come and passed and still no ruling from Peter C. Harvey, who is hearing the case. Everybody is waiting. It's wearing on everyone on the team, on the coach, no doubt.

The final practice that is open to the public is set for tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. The practices against the Eagles Thursday and Friday will be closed to the public.
