Gas prices keep falling: Down another 16.5 cents in Akron, 11.5 cents in Cleveland

GasBuddy says the national average for a gallon of gas is down nearly $2 compared to six months ago.

AKRON, Ohio — Gas prices are still falling throughout Northeast Ohio.

Drivers in Akron are now paying an average of $2.78 per gallon after gas prices dropped another 16.5 cents within the last week, according to new data released by GasBuddy early Monday.

The average price in Cleveland now stands at $2.84 per gallon after experiencing a drop of 11.5 cents. This means that Cleveland’s gas prices are now 67.6 cents cheaper than a month ago and 25.5 cents lower than this time last year.

Nationally, the average price also dipped 11.9 cents within the last week, now averaging $3.09 per gallon. That’s down 57.1 cents from one month ago and 20 cents lower than one year ago.

"The national average for a gallon of gasoline is down nearly $2 compared to six months ago, and heading into Christmas travel week, is at its lowest in a year and a half, saving Americans some $750 million every day," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "While the decline should take the national average under $3 per gallon in the next week or so, it is soon likely to fade as oil prices have held in the $70 per barrel range. But while the declines for gasoline may fade, diesel prices still have considerable ground to cover, and could fall another 50 cents or more in the weeks ahead. Fuel prices across the board have been plunging back into territory more Americans feel is normal, which could certainly boost economic sentiment going forward."
