On July 8, 1945, the USS Codd helped rescue a grounded Dutch submarine, the O-19. Ultimately, the Dutch boat could not be saved. However, its crew was saved. During the rescue, 55 Dutch submariners were saved by the USS Cod before the Dutch ship was ultimately destroyed in order to prevent its capture by an enemy force.

This is considered to be the only international sub-to-sub rescue in recorded history.

Aside from the reenactment, remarks will be made by representatives of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, and the USS Cod. The reenactment will feature the last boatload of O-19 crew members coming aboard the USS Cod as the two flags will be raised and a deck gun salute.
