Several hurt in Coventry crash involving 'high rate of speed'

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities are investigating after multiple were hurt in a crash Monday night.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened around 10 p.m. on Portage Lakes Drive near Longworth Lane.

Authorities say a 21-year-old Barberton man was driving a 2008 Hyundai Tiburon westbound “at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle. Authorities said his vehicle entered the eastbound lane of traffic a struck a 2019 Kia Forte.

The Hyundai’s driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said. A 21-year-old passenger was also hurt, sustaining serious injuries in the crash.

Two people inside the Forte – the 16-year-old driver and her 63-year-old passenger – were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.

“Drugs or alcohol are suspected to be a factor in the crash as well as excessive speed,” authorities noted in a press release. “Three of the occupants did not appear to be wearing seatbelts.”

Portage Lakes Drive was closed for approximately four hours after the crash. Crews from Coventry fire, Green fire, New Franklin fire and Barberton fire all assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Summit Metro Crash Response Team.

No additional details were immediately available.
